Feb 27, 2012 10:00 AM

Feb 29, 2012 04:00 PM

Location

The meetings will be held in the Terre-Europa building.  This is behind the four main building (Terre, Air, Feu and Eau).  You should go directly to the Terre-Europa building (not to be confused with the Terre building!!!) where you get your badges handed out upon arrival. Also ask for wifi-access when you get your badges. The main meeting room is just behind the reception to the right.

The rooms in Terre-Europa will be:

  • Main Room: TE-0-001
  • Discussion Room 1: TE-0-016
  • Discussion Room 2: TE-0-043

Travel

Dassault Systèmes has its headquarters in Vélizy, France which is just outside Paris.  Unfortunately, a new tramway is being constructed in Vélizy and driving in Vélizy is very difficult.  I recommend people book a hotel within walking distance of the Dassault Systèmes campus (see list below).  For those who prefer to stay in Paris or simply visit Paris during the meeting, I have also included information on how to get between the DS campus in Vélizy and Paris.

The DS web site provides this link that includes a map for the DS campus.

Airports

The two main airports in Paris are Charles de Gaulle (CDG) and Orly (ORY).  Of these two, ORLY is much closer to Vélizy.

There is an additional airport far outside Paris called Beauvais-Tillé (BVA) that some budget airlines fly to.

Taxis

Getting to and from the airport should be no problem, but if you need to use a taxi to get around during your visit I would recommend using the G7 taxi service.  They have several benefits over typical taxis in Paris.  First, they won't refuse to take you where you want to go (this is not a joke*).  Second, you can call them to book a taxi and they will actually pick up the phone (again, not a joke*).  Finally, you can request drivers who speak English.

*I often joke with people that I don't know the business model for taxi drivers in France by empirical evidence strongly suggests that it doesn't appear to involve moving people from one place to another.

Trains

Of course, France is well served by trains.  If you take a train into Paris, you have too many options to list here.  The closest station to the DS campus is the Chaville-Vélizy station.  This is part of the RATP system (see below about traveling within Paris) so you'd need to transfer from an intercity train to get their.  The station is far enough that you'd still require a taxi to get to the nearby hotels or the campus itself.

Accomodations in Vélizy

The following are hotels within walking distance of the Velizy campus:

  1. Holiday Inn (there should be a special "Dassault Systèmes" rate here)
  2. Hotel Vol de Nuit
  3. Suitehotel
  4. Forest Hill Hotel

In addition, the Radisson Blue is another hotel with a special "Dassault Systèmes" rate.  However, it is in Boulogne-Billancourt (outside Vélizy).  Its very close to the Metro 9 line (the one I take every day to get to Vélizy) but it would be relatively crowded in morning and evening.  A taxi is a possibility but please take careful note of my comments on taxis written above.

Travel within Paris Area

An extremely useful way to find your way around Paris is the RATP (public transport department).  Their website features and excellent interactive map.  You can also get this same functionality as apps for both iOS and Android.

Unfortunately, while the RATP itself provides services all the way out to Vélizy, the web site and apps generally focus on Paris itself.  As a result, if you need to know how to get from Paris to the DS campus, the RATP information alone is incomplete.  Fortunately, a DS employee wrote (on his own time) a companion web app and iOS app, called DSCambus, that complements the RATP information.  It basically tells you how to get from the various stations on the periphery of Paris to Vélizy.
